In some of my compositions, I always try to put the earth to the test, in order to better understand its limits, especially by working with water. Also, to do this, I could not choose a better subject than this menacing crocodile that I called the teeth of the river. The emphasis was placed both on the power of the jaw and on the splashing of the water to give it the impression that it was emerging from the depths of the water. The animal was sculpted in black earth with medium chamotte (terracotta particles which increase the solidity of the piece). I could very well have not patinated it and just polished it with beeswax, the color of the black clay being already magnificent in itself. However, I preferred to opt for a patina composed of red, green, orange and burnt earth pigments, thus creating a rather particular structural effect to clearly bring out the elusive side of my river teeth.
